Overview The RN on the Critical Care Flex Team will be responsible for providing professional nursing care for patients following established standards and practices in our newly remodeled ICUs. They will assist physicians and staff in coordinating patient care, and demonstrate the ability to safely and accurately operate equipment. The RN on the Critical Care Flex Team works in three different ICU's at the University of Minnesota Medical Center. This position is working 60 hours, 12 hour shifts, every third weekend. The critical care units include the Surgical ICU, the Cardiovascular ICU and Medical ICU. At the University of Minnesota Medical Center, we are a comprehensive stroke center and trauma center. The units have been new remodeled for a total of 63 critical care beds.We care for patients who have had coronary artery bypass, valve replacement and transcatheter aortic valve replacement, aortic arch repair, neurosurgery, complex surgical procedures, and heart/lung and liver transplant. We care for patients with manydifferent diagnoses including: multi system organ failure, pulmonary fibrosis, pneumonia, influenza, sepsis, renal failure, GI bleed, pre/post bone marrow transplant, pre organtransplant (kidney/liver/lung), overdoses, and respiratory/cardiac arrest. Our team also manages patients with decompensated heart failure, adult congenital heart defects, cardiogenic shock, advanced pulmonary hypertension and cardiac arrest. We utilize extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), ventricular assist devices (VAD), intraortic balloon pumps (IABP) and Swan-Ganz catheters routinely. Our complex patient population requires hemodynamic monitoring, critical medication management, management of organ failure, maintenance of systemic perfusion and a high technical skill set.This is a faced-paced and highly technical medical environment. The Registered Nurse is responsible for the assessment, planning, delivery, and evaluation of nursing care for all assigned patient population(s). The RN is responsible for performing these responsibilities in accordance with all policy, procedures, professional practice guidelines and the MN Nurse Practice Act.
