The Assistant Nurse Manager will be assigned to 5-Main, Inpatient Unit, in Patient Care Service. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. The population of male and female veterans served ranges from the adult, age 18, to the elderly adult, age 65 and over. The VA Medical Center is a major interdisciplinary teaching facility, serving medical, surgical, and neurological inpatients and outpatients. There is a large outpatient psychiatric population, with admissions for medical co-morbidities. This position requires visual acuity (glasses permitted), keen hearing (hearing aid permitted), clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking (up to 8 hours), standing (up to 8 hours), stooping, sitting, bending (up to 8 hours), pulling, and pushing. Light lifting under 15 lbs. Light carrying 15-44 lbs. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. Use of rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. Oversight of all assigned work of subordinates, including work assignments and breaks. Serves as lead for Charge Nurses and ensures completion of all Charge Nurse responsibilities. Ensures units are staffed with established nursing hour per patient day with minimal overtime usage./Schedule staff, approve leave or overtime, resolve leave exceptions, and certify time per established policy within in a timely manner. Completes Joint Patient Safety Reviews for work related incidence(s). Manages performance through mentoring, coaching, awards, recognition, and counseling. Makes recommendations to the Nurse Manager regarding disciplinary actions. Participates in performance-based interviewing and timely selection of high- quality candidates. Ensures required competency, certification, and licensure of all subordinate staff. Ensures unit compliance with all infection control and Performance Improvement measures. Conduct daily rounds with patents, staff, and providers. Ensure unit(s) maintain high level of survey readiness. Monitor controlled substance and other medication administration and management to ensure compliance with policy and regulatory guidelines. Reports deficits immediately. Completes monthly reports within established guidelines. Oversees action plans to meet established benchmarks for Performance Improvement measures (dashboards, nursing indicators, patient satisfaction, All Employee Survey, etc.); and other established quality and administrative measures. Monitors documentation and ensures compliance with policy, procedure, and professional guidelines. Maintains unit safety, including suicide prevention, safe patient handling, fire safety, and management of disruptive behavior. Participates in emergency preparedness including contingency for utility outages and weather. Conduct in-depth chart reviews, track trends, maintain spreadsheets/data logs, report findings, and compile action plans for assigned Performance and Quality Improvement initiatives. Contributes to policy and procedure review and updates. Provides oversight of staff compliance with mandatory education (including TMS) and documentation as assigned by the nurse manager. Provides a Patient Centered Care (PCC) environment and ensuring compliance with PCC Center of Innovation initiatives. Unit compliance with service, facility, VISN, and VHA policy and procedure, as well as compliance with AFGE Master Agreement. Participates in service strategic planning and professional growth activities. Provides nurse manager coverage.
