In this role, you will play a critical part in facilitating and coordinating patient movements within our healthcare system and across regional healthcare networks.

The Patient Flow team at Duke University Hospital is looking to grow! Comprised of exceptional clinical professionals, they are dedicated to ensuring the seamless coordination of patient movement within our world-class healthcare system, as well as with neighboring regional healthcare providers.
Department Profile:
The Patient Flow team collaborates with referring agencies, hospitals, clinics, and emergency departments across the state and beyond to ensure the safe and efficient integration of patients into the Duke University Health System. They also oversee patient movement within the facility, coordinating transfers between the Inpatient Units, PACU, Emergency Department, and Ambulatory Clinics. This team works closely with providers to assess patient needs, prioritize them based on acuity, and relocate patients accordingly.
Schedule:
Shift: Nights; 11:00 PM - 7:00 AM
FTE (Full-Time Equivalent): 1.0
Hours: Determined based on departmental needs
Compensation: Paid biweekly/hourly
Additional Benefits: Eligible for shift differentials and overtime as needed and approved
Flexibility: Holidays and weekends may be required
Job Summary:
The Assistant Nurse Manager role is designed to work in coordination with nursing leadership within an assigned unit or department, ensuring effective accomplishment of tasks. As the first line of support for staff, physicians, and other providers on service-specific clinical matters, the Assistant Nurse Manager plays a vital role in fostering a collaborative and productive work environment. This position requires a long-term commitment, encompassing both clinical expertise and strong interpersonal skills. The Assistant Nurse Manager collaborates with the manager on various clinical and non-clinical issues, including employee relations, individual behaviors, and physician relationships. They provide essential support for the unit, department, or service, taking charge of supervising, directing, coaching, and mentoring their designated core group of staff.
Work Performed: In addition to the duties and responsibilities of a CN III, the Assistant Nurse Manager's role includes:
Planning and coordinating clinical requirements for staff, ensuring up-to-date compliance with CBO and CBE requirements.
Assisting with the coordination of unit staff schedules, subject to manager approval.
Coordinating clinical requirements for equipment and supplies with staff.
Regular consultation with preceptors and orientees to offer support and customize orientation on an individual basis.
Collaborating with the manager to resolve issues and enhance workflow processes within the department, taking a proactive approach.
Engaging with various departments to resolve issues and streamline workflow processes, particularly those related to Patient Flow.
Involvement in the interview process for new applicants, guided by departmental leadership.
Mentoring and coaching staff to foster their professional development.
Assessing the performance of new hires and orientees, providing ongoing feedback and coaching.
Understanding and communicating potential clinical/technological equipment or supply issues to relevant team members.
Offering immediate support and education on policy, procedures, equipment, and supplies.
Learning, implementing, and teaching new technology/procedures.
Providing clinical consultation and guidance as needed to facilitate patient flow.
Assisting or directing staff to ensure quality patient flow.
Evaluating staffing needs based on workload and staff competency, reallocating and adjusting staffing according to departmental requirements.
Facilitating assignments that support learning for orientees or nurse learners.
Cultivating an environment of open communication, encouraging staff input in decision-making, conflict resolution, and fostering collegiality among the healthcare team.
Leading staff performance audits related to attitude, team performance, The Joint Commission, DFS Standards, and SCIP initiatives.
Reviewing and providing input on SRSs related to their team or shift.
Facilitating and encouraging staff participation in departmental and hospital committee and council meetings.
Attending departmental and hospital committee meetings as assigned.
Coordinating, facilitating, participating, and overseeing departmental projects, ensuring appropriate follow-through and follow-up.
Undertaking other projects and duties as directed by department leaders.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Comprehensive knowledge of the scope of the registered nurse, licensed practical nurse, and nursing care assistant roles.
Proficiency in applying the nursing process appropriately.
Familiarity with professional theory, practice, and procedure.
Ability to assess nursing needs of both acute and chronically ill patients and their families.
Adept at independently seeking out resources and working collaboratively.
Strong interpersonal skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Effective communication with the healthcare team, physicians, administrators, leadership, and others.
Competency in using sensory and cognitive functions for information processing, treatment, and follow-up.
Fine motor skills for intricate tasks.
Competent in BLS (Basic Life Support) and/or other specialized life support requirements designated by the work area.
Proficient in recording activities, documenting assessments, planning care, interventions, and evaluating patient status.
Comfortable with using computers and adapting to new software programs.
Capable of navigating the entity to provide clinical care for patients.
Able to withstand prolonged standing and walking.
Capable of maintaining focus and organization.
Solid understanding of procedures and techniques involved in administering routine and special treatments to patients.
Preference for three years of experience in an Emergency Department or Critical Care setting.
Selected candidates must meet the Clinical Ladder requirements for CNIII within one year of appointment.
Licensure and Certification Requirements:
Current registration with North Carolina State Board of Nursing as a registered professional nurse OR current compact RN licensure to practice in the state of North Carolina.
BLS (Basic Life Support) certification is required.
